Last night at about 7 pm, the Maui Eldorado's air conditioning system was turned off in order to install the remaining piping and ready the new chillers for their debut. The plumbers worked through the night until about 4 am today. Following a break of several hours while the glue was drying on the new PVC pipes, the new chillers were started and the cold water began to flow. By about 10 am, we could feel the cool air in the lobby. According to Sam, the system is working very well and at a much greater efficiency than the old chillers. In fact, we may be able to use just one chiller for most of the day with the second one starting and running only during the afternoon. There were a few inquiries from guests about the progress of the installation, but everyone seemed to be sympathetic. Fortunately, the weather has been sympathetic as well with a cool evening yesterday and light winds today, giving us that fresh tropical air that you would think might obviate the need for air conditioning in the first place!
In case you were wondering (and even if you weren't!), here's what it looks like inside the chiller. It's really like a big waterfall in there!
