Please take a look at this article which summarizes the debate between state/local governments and online travel agencies regarding the payment of transient accommodations tax (or, as they call it in the article, TOT - transient occupancy tax). As the article mentions, the collection of these taxes will become more important to governments as their revenue stream decreases. Also worth noting is that hotels may be in the middle when the courts ultimately decide who will prevail.
