Voluntourism, Maui Style

Aloha Kakou:

Has lying on a lounge chair at the cabana, doing nothing but listening to the waves and soaking up the rays grown a little thin?

Maybe it's time you looked into doing some volunteer work. Since you're here for such a short time, of course you don't want to make a long-term commitment.

Take a look at Kirsten Whatley's book, "Preserving Paradise". It's chock-full of volunteer opportunities in Hawaii, with more than 20 on Maui. Volunteer tasks can be as simple as counting whales or as demanding as restoring an ecosystem. Almost all of the opportunities require one day or less time, so there's still plenty of time for leisure pursuits. And you can go home both relaxed and inspired, knowing that you did something to help preserve or restore or help a worthy cause here on Maui.
