Rental Car Fees To Increase September 1

Starting September 1, the "customer facility charge" on Hawaii's rental cars will increase from $1 per day to $4.50 per day.

This new fee hike comes in addition to the new Transient Accommodations Tax increase that took effect on July 1.

The state estimates that increased fee will bring in an additional $50 million a year.

The fee increase is to finance a new $229 million consolidated car rental facility in Honolulu, a $190 million facility at Kahului and smaller projects in Hilo and Lihue.
