Aloha Kakou:
Yes, it's called a highway but in many places it looks like someone's rutted, bumpy one-lane gravel driveway. Piilani Highway, around the back side of Haleakala from Kipahulu (past Hana) to Kaupo, is now open again.
Closed for almost 2 years following the earthquakes of October 15, 2006, the newly reopened highway passes cliffs now sporting pali-like chain mail, in place to help stabilize the the cliff's rock faces.
Geologic and engineering studies took most of the first year with construction on the $10.3 million project finally starting in July, 2007.
